Traditional desserts

Hi everyone my name is Marek Hulík from the Slovakian Erasmus team and in this blog I am going to be talking about traditional Slovakian desserts.

I think we all know that we love some sweet dishes/desserts. We drool when we see a delicious-looking dessert. We all know that we live in a country that has some traditional/specific desserts that we crave for. Slovakia, like many other European countries, has a rich tradition of desserts that are usually enjoyed after a hearty meal or on special occasions. Here are some traditional Slovakian desserts that are worth trying:

Pirohy

Pirohy are a type of stuffed dumpling that can be sweet or savoury. For the sweet version, they are often filled with a mixture of mashed potatoes, cottage cheese, and sugar. They are then boiled and served with melted butter and a sprinkle of sugar or cinnamon.

Medovník

Medovník is a traditional Slovak cake that is made by layering thin sheets of honey-flavoured dough with a creamy filling made from sour cream, sugar, and vanilla. The cake is then topped with a layer of caramel and walnuts.

Šúľance

Šúľance are small dumplings made from a dough of flour, eggs, and milk. They are boiled until they are soft and then served with a generous drizzle of sweet poppy seed and fruit sauce or with butter, sugar, and ground nuts.

Trdelník

Trdelník is a sweet, cylindrical pastry made from rolled dough that is wrapped around a stick and then baked over an open flame. It is then coated in sugar and cinnamon and sometimes filled with a mixture of nuts, chocolate, or whipped cream.

Buchty
Buchty are sweet buns that are usually filled with a mixture of sweetened quark cheese or fruit jam. They are baked until they are golden brown and then dusted with powdered sugar.

Závin

Závin is a type of rolled cake that is made by spreading a sweetened mixture of cottage cheese, raisins, and lemon zest over a layer of sweet pastry dough. The dough is then rolled up and baked until it is golden brown.

Oblátky

Oblátky are thin, crispy wafers that are often served with a dollop of whipped cream and fruit jam. They are made by pouring a thin batter of flour, eggs, and sugar onto a hot iron and then baking until they are crispy and golden brown.

Conclusion

Traditional Slovakian sweets are a testament to our country's rich culinary heritage. Many of these desserts have been passed down for generations and have become beloved treats throughout the country.

From pirohy to oblátky, there is a sweet for every taste bud in Slovakia. These are just a few examples of the many delicious traditional Slovakian desserts that are available. If you have a sweet tooth, be sure to try some of these treats the next time you find yourself in Slovakia. I recommend you try out these desserts whenever the opportunity arises.
